Within the United States, Calea Zacatechichi is legal to buy, sell, and consume in 49 states. It is illegal to sell for human consumption in Louisiana only. See below for additional information.

Supplemental Legal Information:

Louisiana passed House Bill No 20 in 2005, which made it illegal to sell Calea Zacatechichi for human consumption, but otherwise is legal (when used for landscaping, decoration, growing, etc.) This bill was signed into law June 28, 2005, as Loiusiana State Act 159.

It is interesting to note that this bill includes Calea Z as part of a very broad sweep that criminalizes human consumption of 40 plants, many of them relatively unknown with the exception of Salvia Divinorum and Amanita Muscaria.

In violation of this law, punishment includes imprisonment for 2-10 years with the possibility of hard labor. Offenders may also be fined up to $20,000.

Tennessee almost passed essentially the same law as Lousiana, but ended up only banning Salvia Divinorum.
